Team Scotland is under starter's orders for next year's Commonwealth Games, which returns north of the Border for the first time since 1986. Scotland's target shooters were the stars of the show in Delhi in 2010 and their medal haul was recognised by Jon Hammond carrying the team flag at the closing ceremony of the Games. Now it is almost time for our athletes to prove they can do the nation proud on home soil too. The Games are being staged not just in Glasgow but also in Edinburgh at the Royal Commonwealth Pool and at Barry Buddon near Carnoustie. The SSRA wants everyone involved in sport in Scotland to play their part too, be it by volunteering for roles at the Games or just lending support to our athletes.

Caughey holds his nerve for SSRA Speedway title

2 March 2014

Larbert's David Caughey capped a superlative day of shooting at the Balerno & Currie range to win the SSRA Speedway final - but only just. Having had to purchase some RWS ammunition from the club to get his bid going at all, Caughey then delivered 400 out of 400. Fiona Crowden kept pace with him, though, and by the end of the final had amassed 986 points to Caughey's 990 - but crucially, both had won 25 match points.

With the excitement - and the tension - audibly building, a tie-shoot then ensued, in which both Scotland squad shooters delivered scores of 99.

Organiser Cyril de Jonckheere marked those cards and realised a second tie-shoot ten-bull card was required. This time, Caughey edged home - by the smallest of margins, 99 to Crowden's 98.

Richard Simpson was third, John Latimer fourth, Ian Henderson fifth, Bill Vaughan sixth, Tom Hodgson seventh and Jim Main eighth. After a sticky start Main turned a corner when he realised the value of having something to eat and promptly delivered a 100 score!

The top eight shooters will be put forward for the Scotland v North Island New Zealand postal match on 23 March at the same venue.

A video clip of the prize presentation can be seen here.

Denwood delights

Updated 31 August 2013

SSRA GP4 saw some tremendous scoring in a packed field at Denwood, with Ken Parr equalling his British 3P record of 1170 on the Saturday, Seonaid McIntosh demonstrating her potential yet again with a score of 588 in 50m Prone on the Sunday and a win in C class and then the C&D Final. Neil Stirton took the honours and the malt whisky in the main grand prix event although it seems that a wandering Iron Maiden fan just had to get in on the act! Look out for more information and scores here soon.

A reminder to interested participants that the final Prone GP of the season, at Gagie on September 8, will be conducted using electronic targets. The previous day at Denwood sees the final 3P GP.

There is still plenty to play for, and you can see the current 3P standings here and the current Prone standings here.

Scots' strong show at Bisley

 Updated 25 August 2013

A sizeable Scottish contingent attended the NSRA's National Rifle Meeting at Bisley from 10-18 August, and Bill Baird led the way with a triumph in the "Roberts" for the British Championship. Baird, now with the Havant club but formerly of Bon Accord, led the aggregate then fell away a little to finish sixth in X Class. And our own inimitable Irishman Cliff "Bones" Ogle was fifth. Baird and Sinclair Bruce qualified for the
final of the British Long Range Championships. Baird pulled off a beautiful card at 100 yards - 198 with a single eight which was remarkable in the rough, windy and wet conditions to win. Bruce, clearly determined to go one better than the Scottish Meeting at Lauder, finished third.

In the Home Countries team events, Scotland, pictured left, lost by ten 136 off to 146 off to England but were more than 30 points ahead of Wales. The Ladies team, pictured right with Cyril de Jonckheere, were beaten by England.

Emma Steeples finished in the top half of C Class and made the Ladies Team (top equal score with Sheena Sharp) and the GB Junior  Drew team  against the USA.

Bruce won the County Champions shoot for Lothian with Bill Vaughan (SC) third & Ogle (F&C) 7th (even with running out of time for his first shot in the final!).

50m championships: Scots excel at Denwood

Updated 22 July 2013

A weekend of excellent shooting saw a number of Commonwealth Games selection standard scores as the sun shone at Denwood (mostly).

Jennifer McIntosh took the honours in Saturday's Women's 3P and Neil Stirton the Men's 3P title. With 20 Megalink targets providing results which could be followed live on the internet, the following day the pair repeated the feat in their respective Prone events but all the finals were keenly contested, with nail-biting finishes. Stirton managed to hold his nerve in a close Prone final to be crowned Scottish Open Champion, just 0.3 ahead of Mark Symankiewicz.  In the Prone elimination round he had shot an impressive 597 (622.8) and in the 340 he came up with a good standing section to produce 1157. McIntosh shot well in the Women’s Prone Open event, recording a 595 with Maria Bexley second on 589 and Sarah Brown taking third on 588, thanks to a higher centre-ten count than Sian Corish of Wales.

The  results of the Scottish 50 metre Championships are available here at  megalink

Lauder 2013: Just champion for Tom Hodgson in Earl Haig

Updated 12 July 2013

Tom Hodgson won the Earl Haig Scottish Championship at Thirlestane Castle with a score of 579, just ahead of Sinclair Bruce and James Paterson.

As is traditional, he was chaired round the range by the other finalists with a piper in attendance - a big improvement on last year when the incessant rain in Dumfries meant winner Emma Cole-Hamilton had to settle for the inside of a tent.

"It's a brilliant feeling and one that will last a long time," said Hodgson, having savoured the traditional winner's glass of whisky.

Scotland gets a result

15 January 2013

Kay Copland won Air Rifle Grand Prix 4 held at Denwood after a dramatic tie-shoot decider with Anne-Marie Bexley in front of an excited worldwide audience.
Thanks to another technological leap by the SSRA, the match results were streamed live on the internet and attracted followers from as far afield as Sydney and Prague while the SSRA Facebook page did a great job of providing commentary as the match unfolded.

"To end up with a final that ended in a tie-shoot could not have been bettered even by the TV broadcasters, with the two protagonists themselves putting in an appearance that left us questioning what can we do to push the bar higher still. Kay Copland scored a 9.5 against an 8.7 from a relative newcomer Anne-Marie Bexley who does not put in a lot of practice, according to to her coach," said organiser Jim McIntosh. "From the feedback from those who were with us on the web, we succeeded in involving a great number of followers not just the shooters but friends and family as well, truly an education for some."
The unsung heroes were Jim and son Bruce who laboured to ensure the range was tried and tested in time for a 9am start on a chilly Sunday morning, with the invaluable contribution of Gavin Walker who developed the software necessary to make the Megalink target system work seamlessly.

The conclusion was this has to be the way forward, Jim continued, bettered only by the atmosphere. "I don’t know if it was the constant enquiry 'is it snowing out there' or the camaraderie amongst those involved in the day."
With this type of performance the future of target shooting in Scotland looks bright. With those in the “boiler house” running the range as well as keeping the webcast running all looks good for the future competitions.

Class A winner Robin Law leads the Air Rifle series with 30 points from Mark Joyce on 13 and Sheena Sharp on 12.
